TANINTHARYI DIVISION- According to people close to Myeik prison, there are no political prisoners among those released from Myeik prison on amnesty on the 76th Independence Day of Myanmar.
On January 4, seventy-four male and eleven female prisoners were released from Myeik Prison on amnesty at noon.
“As usual, those imprisoned for crime and only the military deserters and those who are almost due for the serving time were released,” said a person close to Myeik prison.
He went on to say that the family members of some political figures who came and waited in front of the Myeik prison had lost their hopes and returned home (without their loved ones).
“People have been waiting at the gate entrance since the morning, but the prisoners were released at noon. Only a few came out and those in the waiting returned (when the people they had been waiting for had not been released on amnesty),” said a local.
It was initially reported that more than sixty inmates, including political prisoners, were released.
The junta council announced that more than 9,000 inmates nationwide were released on amnesty on Independence Day.
