MON STATE – According to people close to the prison, 670 prisoners were released, but only 31 political prisoners were included in various prisons in Mon State.
The military junta council is celebrating the 76th anniversary of Independence Day by releasing prisoners in various prisons around the state. The prisoners were released with the condition that if they commit a crime again, they will have to additionally serve the same sentence as before.
According to the release of prisoners, 350 from Mawlamyine Prison, 93 from Thaton Prison, 103 from Kyaikmayaw Central Prison, 20 people from Yin Nyein Production camp and 104 people were released from Zin Kyaik, Inn Byaung, Moppalin, Ingabo and Taung Soon Production Camps.
Among them are the political prisoners of the Kyaikmayaw Central Prison, where hundreds of political prisoners are abducted and imprisoned 23 prisoners and 8 from Thathon Prison. Only 31 political prisoners are included in amnesty total.
A former political prisoner said that the political prisoners granted amnesty by the military junta council were only those who were imprisoned under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code and had only one year of their sentence left.
“Now, among those released are gamblers and political prisoners whose sentence are 505 less than a year. There is no other case. From our point of view, only more than ten political prisoners have been released. It’s political pretending. The junta’s goal is to use political prisoners as a proxy. It will continue to be his (military council’s) outlet,” he said.
The military junta council said that in this year’s Independence Day, it was announced that 9652 prisoners were released prisons across the country.
According to the announcement of the military council, 114 foreigner prisoners were included and they were deported.
According to the data of Assistant Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), since the military coup d’état, more than 25,700 people have been abducted nationwide as of January 3.
