RAKHINE STATE – The Arakan Army (AA) informed at the March 4 press conference that the junta council targeting the civilians during the resurging battles in Rakhine State killed and injured hundreds of resident civilians and displaced over 300,000.
AA launched offensives in Rakhine State and Paletwa Township of Chin State starting November 13, 2023 and the junta council used air, artillery, navy and ground attacks in those battles, intentionally targeting the civilians.
During the three months from the time battles resurged in the region till February 13, 2024, the junta council is said to have killed 111 innocent civilians injured 357, said AA spokesperson Mr. Khaing Thu Kha.
He added that 292 civilians were abducted and warned that there could be more casualties and more people could be arbitrarily detained.
As battles intensified in Rakhine State, more than 300,000 people have been fleeing to escape from the attacks and terrorizing of the junta council, with most of them being from Pauktaw, Mrauk U, Ponnagyun and Minbya Townships, added Mr. Khaing Thu Kha.
Most of those displaced people are taking shelter at monasteries, schools and homes and relatives and it is said that around 80% of them are unable to receive sufficient help due to the junta council blocking humanitarian efforts.
At present, the displaced people are reported to be in need of food and nutritious items, medicine and healthcare related items, temporary shelters, construction materials to rebuild homes, living aids and mine clearance equipment’s to re-establish the people.
AA also requested the assistance of international community for focused and effective humanitarian assistance in Rakhine State.
