RAKHINE STATE – It is reported that the junta council arrested three young men, writer Wai Hin Aung and daughter who were visiting the victims of the cyclone in Rakhine State and doing relief work on Tuesday (May 23) afternoon.
A villager said that the writer and group were arrested by the terrorist junta council forces near Amyint Kyun Village while they were on their way to the village of Kalar Chaung in Ponnagyun Township to donate water to the refugees.
“They were arrested by military intelligence forces. As far as I know, they went to Kalar Chaung Village to donate water. The car carrying the bottles of water and the car in which Mr. Wai Hin Aung was on board were seized. It is known that Mr. Wai Hin Aung’s daughter was also with him. The military intelligence forces chased after them and detained both cars after they passed the inspection at Kyauktan Gate. I don’t know why he was arrested,” said the villager.
Mr. Wai Hin Aung was seen being taken to the Kyauktan Gate checkpoint when they were arrested, but at present it is not known whether they are still at the checkpoint or not.
“We saw them being brought inside the checkpoint, but after that we saw the cars from the gate leaving the checkpoint. We can’t say for sure if they were sent to another place or if they are still there,” continued the resident of the Amyint Kyun Village.
Mr. Wai Hin Aung was sentenced to prison for defamation of the state under the pretext of a literary ceremony in 2018. He was freed after the 2021 coup d’état’.
Currently, the junta council has banned international organizations from helping those affected by the cyclone, as well as imposed restrictions on philanthropists who are helping on the ground.
