RAKHINE STATE – Mocha Cyclone destroyed many houses, buildings, towns and villages in Rakhine State in May. Some of the remote villages have not yet received the relief aids, and some of the villages that have received are being asked by the military council to pay a fee, according to local residents.
“Each house gets 5 cans of rice in our village, 25 sheets of tin for roofs, and three cartons of mamee dried noodles were given for the whole village to be distributed via lots,” said a resident of Kyauktaw Township, who did not want to be named.
In addition, the cyclone victims are facing difficulties as they cannot afford to pay the transportation fee for getting the relief aids .
A local resident said, “We have to pay 500 kyats for 12 cans of rice to the junta council, and 5000 kyats for a sheet of tin, as transportation cost.”
“We also had to rent cars to transport these items to the village. The car rental fee is 100,000 kyats per car,” the administrator of Pauktaw Pyin, Ponnagyun Township said.
