MANDALAY DIVISION – It is reported that the military council sentenced Mr. Naung Htet Aung, the former president of the Yangon University Students’ Union (Ba-Ka-Tha Federation), who is serving time in Obo Prison in Mandalay to another three years in prison last Wednesday (August 9).
Mr. Naung Htet Aung, who is also a member of the Central Committee of the Basic Education Staff General Strike Committee (BEGSC), was sentenced to three years in prison by the Obo Prison Court for Section 505(a) of the Penal Code, which was filed at Chan Aye Tha San Township Court along with another member of the Central Committee, Ms. Thet Su Hlaing, a school teacher.
Mr. Naung Htet Aung was sentenced to five years in prison under Section 52(a) of Terrorism on August 18, 2022, and with the current charge, he has been charged for a total of eight years in prison.
In July of last year, the former Student Union President was beaten and held in solitary confinement by the Obo prison authorities for staging a hunger strike in prison for sentencing dead penalties to four political prisoners including prominent politicians such as Mr. Jimmy and Mr. Phyo Zeya Thaw, according to the people close to him.
It is reported that his health condition has worsened since then and he was not allowed to receive medical treatment.
“As his ankles were chained to an iron bar for some time, he could not walk properly but dragging his feet like a person in a stroke. There wasn’t any permission to get treated. Six people are packed inside an eight-by-ten-feet prison cell,” said Mr. Aung Pyaesone Phyo, the current president of the Yangon University Student Union (Ba-Ka-Tha Federation).
The teacher Ms. Thet Su Hlaing who had been sentenced to prison, along with Mr. Naung Htet Aung, was sentenced for five years of imprisonment under section 52(a) of terrorism law and three years under section 505(a). With the recent additional charge under section 505(a) to three years imprisonment, she now has to serve for a total of 11 years in prison.
Mr. Naung Htet Aung, who had been wanted by the junta regime under Section 505(A), got arrested on the night of October 30, 2021 in Mandalay, along with two members of the BEGSC Central Committee, school teachers Ms. Thet Su Hlaing and Mr. NaingThiha Kyaw, and a former member of Mandalay University Students Union, Mr. Yan Soe Paing.
