MYANMAR – Car owners and motorcycle owners who want to buy fuel say that most gas stations in Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw only sell fuel for a few hours and that the fuel runs out quickly.
“We lined up at around 4:00 in the morning. Some people left their cars on the street. They parked in front of gas stations with phone numbers written on the windshield. At around 5:30 in the morning, the gas station started selling them. By 9:30 or 10:00 in the morning, they ran out of gas. They put up a sign saying that they would return it in the evening. The sign says that fuel will be procured in Thilawa, so it will be sold after the return of the oil tanker. It’s not just one day. December 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th, all 4 days, it was like this. It’s happening in every station,” said a taxi driver from Yangon.
Most of the gas stations in Nay Pyi Taw and Pyinmana have only octane 92 gas, octane 95 or only sell diesel PD. Most of the stations are sells only one type. There are various types of stations and there are only few stations that sell all types of fuel. Even if the station sells all types of motor oil, it usually runs out after about 2 hours of selling.
“Motorcycles and sidecars are piling up for gas. People are suffering. All the stations mainly sell octane 92 and 95. Diesel PD is only sold in some stations. In addition, the price of gasoline is about 7,000 kyats per litre. The people who are really important can’t care for 7000. They have to fill it up on the bike and go around,” explained a worker transporting materials near Nay Pyi Taw and Pyinmana.
In Mandalay, almost every gas station is crowded with cars and motorcycles which are queuing up for fuel, and the fuel is mostly available to purchase only 2 times, in the morning and at the evening. It is known that there is a big row of cars and bikes.
If there is no more gas in the morning, people park their cars in front of the gas station and wait again for the evening. People are standing in line at the gas station all day long. Now, even the vendors are selling drinking water, sweets and food near the que. I’ve never seen anything like this happen before,” explained a Mandalay resident.
The Terrorist War Council is currently suspending the sale of dollars to oil importers after allowing the US dollar to be traded at the market price according to the change of policy. Due to the shortage of dollars, it was found that it is no longer possible to import fuel for domestic use.
