AYEYARWADY DIVISION-In Yae Kyi Township, since July 17, junta police and junta municipal employees have been inspecting bicycles and issuing fines.
Residents said that they stop and check the bike commuters in the town and if the bicycles do not have bells and brakes, they are forced to pay a fine of 5,000 Myanmar Kyats.
“It’s like they’re making a way to extort, they’re chasing motorcycles, trishaws, and tricycles, and now they’re turning to bicycles,” a local resident said.
It is reported that in the towns under the region of Yae Kyi Township, municipal employees and the police under military junta council are chasing and checking trishaws and imposing fines.
Residents said that since the beginning of June, junta traffic control forces have been abducting motorcyclists in various areas of town and extorting money.
Locals voiced out their opinions that since the residents are using bicycles more and more, junta is focusing more on bicycles to fine.
