KARENNI STATE- It was reported that those who fled to Shan State from Karenni after the start of operation-1111 were shot by the Military Council when they were home to carry food and materials due to shortages.
On December 23rd, two Karenni IDPs from Banmauk village of Shan State were killed by the military council’s heavy weapon fire while returning home (Karenni) and carrying crops.
“The Banmauk-Pekhon road is not allowed to travel yet. But they neglected the warnings and tried to carry corn-yield (on a cart) on that road when they were hit by a large weapon. One of them died on the spot and the other reportedly died in the hospital,” said a Karenni IDP.
After Operation 1111 in Karenni, some roads leading to Shan State from the Loikaw have been blocked by the military council troops, and inspections were made casually, said the IDPs.
Some of the Karenni IDPs who went back to Loikaw to bring their belongings were also faced with surprise checks by the military council troops. A man who fled the war said that he was confronted with knife-pointing threats by junta troops.
“Junta troops do not allow civilians to pass the area carrying goods and food. When I sneaked in with the materials and caught by junta troops at the crossroad, I was examined knife-pointed,” said a man who has been fleeing the war.
There are around 30,000 Karenni refugees who have arrived in Shan State as a result of the fights in Loikaw. The residents of Shan State are helping them with housing and food, but the need for food continues as the period of the war extends.
