MYANMAR- After the military coup, three armed groups; the Karen National Army (KNU), Chin National Force (CNF), and All Burma Student’s Democratic Front (ABSDF) that previously signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) had abandoned the path and fighting against them, said the Deputy Minister of Information of the Military Council, Major General Zaw Min Tun.
This statement was made at the 22nd military press conference, held at the Ministry of Information in Naypyidaw on Tuesday, August 22.
General Zaw Min Tun said, “There are only three armed groups that are fighting against the military knowing what we are doing during the political changes. These groups are KNU (Karen National Union), CNF (Chin National Front) and ABSDF (All Burma Students Democratic Front). But we always keep the door open for discussion.”
Under the previous civilian government, ten ethnic armed groups had signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA). The military stated that the seven groups; KNU/KNLA-PC ( Karen National Liberation Army), PaO National Liberation Organization (PNLO), DKBA (Democratic Karen Buddhist Army), LDU (Lahu Democratic Union), ALP ( Arakan Liberation Party), NMSP (New Mon State Party) and RCSS (Restoration Council of Shan State) continue to hold talks with junta council, while KNU, CNF and ABSDF started fighting junta.
The Karen National Union (KNU) officers stated that the NCA contract had broken once the military staged the coup and took power, whereas RCSS announced (after the coup) that it would continue to follow the NCA path.
