SHAN STATE – Local residents reported that the junta troops and revolutionary forces are fighting fiercely in Loi Wein Mountain, Lashio Township and there are junta attack helicopters hovering over the area.
Starting at 4:00 a.m. on June 5, there were gunshots and artillery fire near Upper Manai Loi Wein Mountain in Lashio Township. The sound of gunfire was so loud that the whole city of Lashio heard it. The sounds of shootings reportedly continued from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. Residents said that they learned that three Northern Alliance forces attacked the junta battalion near Loi Wein Mountain.
“From 4 a.m. to around 4:39 a.m., I could hear continuous gunshots and shellings. It was so close to my house that I couldn’t even get out from under my bed. At 4:42 a.m., the shooting stopped, but there were still junta troops shooting wildly. There is a junta light infantry battalion near Loi Wein Mountain,” said a local resident.
After that, it was reported that several attack helicopters from the junta council were flying towards the villages in and around Lashio from around 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. “The military council’s attack helicopters are flying towards the villages near Loi Wein Mountain. They are circling. I think the people of the villages need to get away. They (junta forces) can target the villages arbitrarily. It looks like the dogs (junta soldiers) suffered huge losses,” explained a local resident.
The reported area is where TNLA, MNDAA and KIA forces are actively operating, and the fighting started when the junta council was preparing to launch offensives by forming many subordinate militia including Pyu Saw Htee.
After the talks between the junta council and the three northern alliance members in Mongla from June 1 to 2 ended in abrupt failure, large-scale fighting began in Hsenwi City of Shan State on June 4 and in Lashio on early morning of June 5.
