RAKHINE STATE – More than 100 Mytel towers and more than 200 MPT towers in Rakhine State are unable to be re-fueled, so phone lines and internet lines will be cut off soon, according to the respective officials.
An official from the state communications said, “The main problem is that we can’t find fuel in Rakhine. We can no longer add fuel to the towers since it could not be bought anywhere. Moreover, the towers in the battlezone can no longer be fueled. Currently, over 100 Mytel towers and over 200 MPT towers cannot be refueled. In about a week, all the towers will run out of fuel. Then, phone line and the internet access will be cut off.”
Out of more than 500 MPT towers in Rakhine State, more than 200 cannot be fueled, and more than 100 out of 300 Mytel towers are also unable to be fueled.
A resident of Minbya said, “Villages in the rural area no longer have phone signals. How can one access the internet if we don’t have (telephone) signals? Even in the cities, there are more and more places where the Wifi access is being cut off. If this goes on for the next 10 days or so, communication will be cut off in all of Rakhine State.”
In Rakhine State, since November 13, the Arakan Army (AA) re-launched offensives against the military council troops, and the military council has closed all the roads and waterways in Rakhine State. Due to that, there is a shortage of fuel in Rakhine State and the communication towers cannot be refilled with fuel.
