MYANMAR- According to information sources from Insein Prison, the remaining political prisoners are being tortured and subjected to human right violation more frequently after the military council granted amnesty last August 1, the birthday of the (Royal) White Elephant (symbol of kingship/ universal monarch).
Since the beginning of August, some political prisoners have been sent to the police (interrogation), being chained or being held in solitary confinement, according to a member of the prisoner’s family.
“If you were sent to the police, (interrogation) there is less chance that you will come back alive. Many were beaten and forced to do hard labour and eventually die. Some are being chained, the iron bar distance between each chained foot differs from 6 inches to 18 inches. Even with the 6 inches iron bar chain, it’s not easy to walk,” he added.
He went on to say that the prison staff beat the confined prisoners and if they are seriously injured, they were being moved back to the lower dormitories.
At present, the victims of oppression are not only political prisoners but also others under different charges, and are not even allowed to see their family visitors.
The former political prisoner who was released this month said, “Many political prisoners were beaten in confinement rather than forced to do hard labour. Some were sent to the police where one will likely be forced to farm for a month in iron foot-chain,” he said.
At the moment, only family members registered in the census can send letters to prisoners, and relatives who are not registered in the census must show an approval letter (from Junta’s administration), he said.
Only about a quarter of the political prisoners were released by the military council on Amnesty on August 1 and the remaining prisoners are subjected to human rights violations every day, said their family members.
