KARENNI STATE – High incidence of malaria cases had occurred among the people in a camp of Internally Displaced People (IDP) on the eastern part of Loikaw, said a health care personnel treating the IDPs.
The outbreak of malaria started last April, and now that the rainy season has arrived, it is said that the most cases of malaria have occurred among the IDPs who live close to streams.
“The place where the IDPs are sheltering is located near a stream. Moreover, the stream gets muddy when it rains, and clear in a short time. For that reason, the disease-causing insects spawn,” said a health care personnel treating the IDPs.
At present, the patients who suffered Malaria infection were treated and provided mosquito nets, but they have not been able to distribute mosquito nets to every household in the IDP camp.
“The mosquito nets are not enough and we want to provide everyone, one or two per household. However, the number of ordered mosquito nets and the number of houses in the village are not equal and everyone can’t access,” the health care personnel continued.
More than 20 people have been diagnosed with malaria in June in that IDP camp, which has more than 200 houses and nearly 800 people. In addition, there is no clinic and hospital for IDPs for major health problems due to the difficulty of transportation in the IDP camp.
Currently, there are around 250,000 of IDPs in Karenni State and they are hiding and sheltering in the nearby jungles, so they are in need of food supplies as well as shelters, according to aid workers.
