TANINTHARYI DIVISION – Over 100 prisoners in Tanintharyi Division were among the prisoners released nationwide on Waso Full Moon Day by the junta council.
According to the data, the total number of prisoners released in the division is 140; 35 from Dawei Prison, 32 from Myeik Prison, 17 from Kyaukphyutaung Prison, 16 from Htonkhar (Sinphyushin) Prison and 40 from Kawthoung Prison.
However, there were close to zero political prisoners released with most of the released prisoners being imprisoned under charges of theft, robbery and drug related charges, according to a source close to Dawei Prison.
“Not even political prisoners who are due to be released soon were included despite the fact that many political prisoners were rumoured to have been included,” said a woman close to prison authorities.
The junta council announced that a total of 7,749 prisoners were released nationwide on the Waso Full Moon Day.
Over 50 prisoners were similarly released in Tanintharyi Division in May.
