SHAN STATE – Mr. Vanda, an activist from Hsipaw, said that the Ngweyi Pale Company in the Namtu region has illegally seized about 500 acres of farmland from the local people, claiming to mine coal in cooperation with the War on Terrorism Council.
In August 2023, Ngweyi Pale Company, claiming to mine coal in the Namtu area, cooperated with the Terrorist War Council and confiscated nearly 3,000 acres of land. During the expropriation, nearly 500 acres of farmland belonging to the local residents were taken, and despite the objections of the local residents, large machines are being prepared to dig into the farmlands.
“500 acres of farmland including more than 400 acres of the watershed area are seized. At the moment, the local residents are protesting against the company’s digging. However, they forcefully put equipment into the fields of the locals, so they cannot harvest the crops that will be harvested this year. We are losing a lot,” said Vanda, an activist from Hsipaw.
The coal mining of the Ngweyi Pale Company caused a lot of damage to the natural environment, and despite the people’s constant objections, the Terrorist War Council took a lot of taxes from the Company to buy weapons. Therefore, on the 1st of October, young people from the Northern Shan region organized a campaign in Hsipaw “to boycott the products of the Ngweyi Pale Company, which is supporting the Junta Council to buy murderous weapons, and to stand with the people of Namtu.”
