MYANMAR- According to Mr. Theik, representative of All-Myanmar Political Prisoner Network, six political prisoners died within the three months from January 1st to March 31st due to the torture and abuse of power by the police and the staff of the Prison Department.
“Many people were taken away from their cells by the army and the police and later died. Not even the family members were informed of the reason for their death. The prison’s procedure when a person dies, medical records must be provided, which is also stipulated in the law. But now, we can only say that political prisoners are facing life-threatening conditions.”
On February 8, Ms. Noble Aye and Mr. Aung Ko Hein (aka) Laykhwin were killed by the army and the police in War Township Court.
On March 8, Mr. Win Thiha and Mr. Min Thu (aka) Malawishek Min were taken out of Dawei prison by the junta army and police and killed.
On March 29, military council troops stationed at Monywa No. 1 Police Station killed Mr. Aung Kyaw Zin, and similarly, Mr. Naing Win Tun was beaten to death by staff members of Myingyan Prison.
In 2024, it was reported that six political prisoners were killed in three months whereas only one political prisoner died in 2023. It could be concluded that oppression and torture in prisons have increased this year.
