MYANMAR – After the junta battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Thet Aung who was captured as a prisoner of war during the battle at Thanbo Village in Nawnghkio Township, Shan State was seen smiling in the photos released by the resistance forces, the junta council arrested his family members, reported a source from Pyin Oo Lwin military community.
On January 3 around 7:30 a.m., Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and Mandalay People’s Defence Force (PDF) attacked and captured the junta camp at Thanbo Village. The junta battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Thet Aung was captured alive during the battle and he was seen smiling in the released photos even though the junta council suffered heavy casualties during the battle. As such the National Unity Government Minister of Defence Yee Mon commented that the lieutenant colonel is relieved for his safety only after he was captured by the People’s Defence Force.
“The junta council found it suspicious that Lt. Col. Thet Aung captured in Thanbo was all smiles in the photos. So, they arrested his family, reportedly to interrogate. They are still not released,” said the source from Pyin Oo Lwin military community.
Following the capture of Lit. Col. Thet Aung, it is said that the military family members have been reminding the officers and soldiers to not appear happy when they are captured in consideration of the safety of the family members. Moreover, many military family members have been using various reasons to leave the barracks while some family members straight up ran away when they didn’t get permission to leave.
