KACHIN STATE – Kachin military sources and Kachin residents said that on August 15, three junta battalion commanders who disobeyed orders and refused to attack the Nam Sanyang area near the headquarters of the Kachin Independence Army (KIO/KIA) were arrested by the Northern Military Command.
According to a local Kachin news source, the three battalion commanders from infantry battalion 12 and 13, and light infantry battalion 411 under junta Division 88 have been arrested for insubordination, for refusinh to fight at the front line of the offensive.
The local news source said, “They were ordered to go to the frontlines. But they didn’t want to go. So they retreated and we’re reportedly charged with insubordination. If they went to the frontlines, they could die, and if they were dead, they will no longer be able to see their family. But in the case of insubordination, the punishment will only be imprisonment, a maximum of 5 years. They might have thought that after the punishment, they can reunite with their families. That was probably what they thought.”
Among the captured battalion commanders, the commander of Infantry Battalion 13 had died four days ago during interrogation at the No. 21 Military Operations Command in Bahmo, according to a military source in the Kachin region.
“I asked for the name of the battalion 13 commander. He died four days ago. He became seriously ill and was not given medical treatment,” said the military source.
“We also learned that two battalion commanders from IB 37 and LIB 387 who refused to continue the offensive along the Myitkyina-Bahmo highway from the side of Waingmaw were arrested yesterday (August 15) by the regional military headquarters. We heard that they were taken from the Khazu army camp. That happened yesterday. They said that the two battalion commanders chose to be jailed,” said the military source in the Kachin region.
