MYANMAR-Among more than 550 prisoners, who were transferred from Insein prison to Tharyarwaddy prison were mostly political prisoners and drug cases. U Tun Kyi, a member of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said that 330 male prisoners and 235 female prisoners were transferred from Insein Prison to Tharyarwaddy Prison on May 9.
“They were moved yesterday. We don’t know exactly how many political prisoners and how many are drug cases. It is difficult to investigate due to the news blackout. Those who were transferred for drug cases are not big dealers. They were arrested with a small amount of drugs and only those who could not give money were moved. Those who can give money are kept in the hospital ward of Insein prison” said U Tun Kyi.
This kind of moving of political prisoners to other prisons is purposely intended to face difficulties not only for political prisoners but also for their family members. “They (SAC) are moving around the political prisoners who were abducted illegally like a chicken in and out of a basket, intentionally and cruelly”. Said U Tun Kyi.
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) is extremely concerned about the health and lives of the political prisoners who have been transferred to Tharyarwaddy Prison.
“At Insein Prison, there is a riot prevention and suppression team led by the four prison wardens. This team gathers news about what political prisoners say and what they are doing from the prisoners they have raised. They target the political prisoners who are asking for their rights and move them to other prisons. If anything happens, the SAC must take accountability and responsibility” said U Tun Kyi.
The new political prisoners at the new prison have been beaten by prisoners who are in charge of the ward appointed by the prison authorities, according to the instruction of the prison authorities.
