SOUTHERN SHAN STATE – According to a local news source, the village administrator of Khaung Taing, himself, is collecting military service allowance depending on income class and threatened to remove those who don’t pay from the village community.
The Khaung Taing village administrator is collecting support money for those enlisted for military service list on April 1st, under the Nyaung Shwe Township Administration Zone. It is reported that 15,000 kyats was collected from rich households, 10,000 kyats from the middle class households and 5,000 kyats from the lower income households have.
“There are 800 households in the village. Even if you collect 2,000 Kyats per house, you would have more than 10 million kyats. But they were asking for too much. The administrator dared not visit one house after another to collect the money thus they summoned the locals to come to his home and pay,” said a resident.
Those who did not contribute to the military service allowance were threatened (by the administrator) that they will be rejected from social events in the community.
Among the 35 village tracts of Nyaungshwe Township, due to the pressure of the administrator of Nyaungshwe Township’s forceful arrest in town if military service enlistment is not received, the district administrators are collecting the list themselves. In the current condition, in the villages of Inlay, most people do not want to be enlisted and replacements need to be made, thus money has been collected to give incentives as a military service allowance.
