MYANMAR – All poor university students who had received educational grants from the Ministry of Education have been summoned by the military council to serve in the military, and if they do not serve in the military and postpone, they will have to pay 80,00,000 kyats as compensation.
According to the recently obtained lists, students who attended the university with government subsidies from the Ministry of Education from Pathein University, Maubin University, and some universities in Mandalay Division, are being asked to submit applications for military service recruitment that will begin at the end of April.
“Poor university students who received government subsidies in the Irrawaddy division are being persuaded to serve in the military. If they fail to join the military when they are called, they will have to pay 80,00,000 kyats as compensation. The government subsidy is 3,00,000 kyats per month. Parents and students are upset,” said a person close to a university student who received government subsidies from Maubin University.
Similarly, it is known that the junta council is informing the administration bodies of all the poor students who have graduated with government subsidies to submit their applications when the recruitment of military personnel starts at the end of April.
“The township and ward administrative bodies have sent notices to all young people who graduated with grants from universities in the Mandalay Division to apply for military service. They said that they couldn’t avoid this. They said that they must submit applications,” a young man from Tatgyi village, Amarapura township, Mandalay division, explained.
