BAGO DIVISION – Up to 31 political prisoners have been placed in solitary confinement for holding a Martyrs’ Day movement as of August 4, according to Myanmar Political Prisoners Network.
Only reports that 15 female political prisoners were placed in solitary confinement for wearing black ribbons on Martyrs’ Day came out initially. Then more reports came out that 16 male political prisoners were also put in solitary confinement.
“We only learned yesterday (August 3) that male political prisoners were also placed on solitary confinement,” said Mr. Thaik Tun Oo, the representative of Myanmar Political Prisoners Network.
Prison authorities reportedly accused that Mr. Than Toe Aung, the youth executive of Thanlyin Township NLD (National League for Democracy) led the Martyrs’ Day movement in the prison.
Mr. Than Toe Aung and 15 other political prisoners were then assaulted in Mingan Monastery in the prison and put in solitary confinement. Four of them, including Mr. Than Toe Aung, were beaten to the point of falling unconscious and have been sent to the prison hospital, said a source close to the prison. Among them, Mr. Than Toe Aung is said to be in critical condition.
Tharyarwaddy Prison is historically notorious for oppressing political prisoners.
After the military coup, political prisoners transferred to Tharyarwaddy Prison are said to be harshly whipped at the gate, according to recounts of released political prisoners.
