SHAN STATE – Residents of Aungban said that they have to pay for replacements as there are very few people willing to join the junta army.
Out of the 12 wards in Aungban, hugely populated wards such as Ward 3, 4, Myohaung, Hleyoe, Nyaungpinhtaung, Mingalar and Ywarngansu that have a large population had to send two people per ward into the army while sparsely populated wards such as Ward 1, 2, Letmapin and Ywarthit had to send one person each.
Each replacement reportedly cost from 30 to 40 lakhs and each household has to pay from 10,000 to 15,000 MMK.
“We have no choice as we can’t avoid it. We have to pay. For now, it’s not our turn yet,” said a parent from Nyaungpinhtaung Ward.
Town elders and rich residents had to pay for town protection and conscription costs while the ward administration is finding it difficult to find replacements to fill the required quota.
In addition, as most young people had fled the town to avoid the conscription, the town is said to be void of youths.
