MYANMAR – The junta council announced that the unregistered online sales and services in Myanmar can be punished with imprisonment of six months to three years and up to five lakhs in fine.
Retails and service businesses online must register within six months and those who do not comply can face a minimum six months to maximum three years in prison as well as a cash fine of five lakhs under section 5 of the Important Goods and Services Act. In addition, the court can also order to destroy, confiscate as State property or manage in other form, the related goods.
“Registration means to apply for license. In fact, online shopping is a kind of home business that’s done via Facebook. Families earn their livelihoods thanks to those businesses. They (junta regime) is forcing registration to tax and impose restrictions on those businesses, basically to bully those businesses,” said a person selling second hand mobile phones online.
