MANDALAY DIVISION – Sangha Union (Mandalay) issued a statement on June 27 regarding the loss of contact with the human rights activist U Thobita (Alanka Star) from Mandalay, who was arrested and imprisoned by the junta group.
On February 1, 2021, when the military coup d’état took place, at 4:00 a.m., the military group arrested Sayadaw U Thobit (Alanka Star) who was staying in Mandalay. In 2018, he was sentenced to two years in prison by the Amarapura court for the Section (66)(d) case filed by the terrorist army and another two years in prison for section (505) (a) from the prison court of the junta group. Hence, he was sentenced to a total of four years, and although he will be released on June 20, he has not come out of prison and has lost contact, said Sayadaw U Dhammametta, a member of the Sangha Union (Mandalay).
“About two weeks before his due date to release, I heard through the court hearings that U Thobita (Alanka Star) was going to be released. On the day he has to be released from prison, family members came to welcome him, but it was heard that he was not seen leaving the prison. We are worried because we haven’t been able to contact him any further,” said U Dharmametta.
U Thobita (Alanka Star) is a famous monk who consistently worked for the rule of law and the rights of the people, and was the victim of the hatred of the terrorist army authorities and their associates since before the junta council took over power, according to a statement from the Sangha Union (Mandalay).
“U Thobita (Alanka Star) has not been in Obo prison since June 20 when he was to be released. It is not known where he was taken by the terrorist military council, and he has lost contact with his family for about 7 days. U Thobita (Alanka Star) is a prominent monk who consistently worked for the country’s rule of law and the rights of the people. The terrorist army and its allies have been unwilling (absolutely) since the days of the civilian democratic government to carry out such activities, and they may have great grudges. Therefore, we have issued a notification that we are concerned about the danger to the life of U Thobita (Alanka Star) who has done his best to uphold the rule of law by doing good to the people,” Sangha Union (Mandalay) reported.
On the day U Thobita (Alanka Star) was to be released from prison, the military group spread false information on social networks accusing him of being the NLD lobby along with his photos.
