AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL – Amnesty International reported that the number of people executed all over the world reached the highest during five years in 2022.
It was stated in the report that there were 885 people executed in a year although it did not include the executions by China where thousands were believed to have been carried out, as well as Afghanistan, North Korea, Syria, Vietnam due to difficulties in collecting and confirming the data.
The number of executions increased 53 percent more than in 2021 and 90 percent of those were carried out in the Middle East nations such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
According to the data, the highest number of executions were done by Iran where 576 people were executed, compared to 314 executions in 2022. 255 of those people were executed for drug-related charges, 21 people were executed for rape and 18 people were executed for blasphemy.
Saudi Arabia executed 65 people in 2021 but the number tripled to 196 in 2022, recording the most death penalty in 30 years. Saudi Arabia had also executed 81 death penalties in one day. 41 of those were Shi’a Muslims minority and two were executed after being convicted of participation in protest against the government.
Myanmar was reported to have executed four people in 2022, same as Bengladesh. But there were be a lot of veiled executions done by the junta council that is not easy to identify.
It was also reported that six countries abolsihed the death penalty either fully or partially in 2022 and 125 out of 195 member states of the United Nations have called for a moratorium on executions.
