MYANMAR – According to local reports, the ASEAN summit has decided to hand over the position of 2026 ASEAN rotating chairmanship to the Philippines without allowing Burmese terrorist generals to take over.
The military coup that seized power from the Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government was strongly condemned by Western countries, including the United States, and economic sanctions were imposed.
The generals of Myanmar also lost the position of ASEAN rotating chairmanship.
At the closed-door meeting of the ASEAN summit held today, Philippine President Marcos said that the Philippines will be the rotating chairman of ASEAN on behalf of Myanmar.
“The Philippines is ready to serve as the 2026 ASEAN rotating chairmanship,” the Philippine president said in his official press release. However, the President of the Philippines needed to explain why the Philippines took over the position of ASEAN chairmanship instead of Myanmar.
Banning Myanmar military generals without allowing them to take the rotating position of ASEAN chairman is the junta council’s terrorist killings in Myanmar.
Some ASEAN diplomats say that it is because the Myanmar junta’s army’s continues brutal killings and worrying about the deterioration of relations between the United States and the European Union which does not recognize Myanmar military generals.
