KACHIN STATE – While some townships in Kachin state are facing floods, the water level of Uyu Creek has risen in Hpakant town and flooding is starting to occur in residential areas.
“The water has started to enter Lone Khin village. The water level of the Uyu Creek has risen by more than ten feet and it has been raining heavily. Hpakant flood is usually serious, so we need to make preparations,” said a person who is working on social assistance.
The water level of Uyu Creek has been rising since the morning of July 1 and flooding has started to occur in residential areas. Residents said that Lone Khin, San Khar Hmaw and Mazwutyang villages have already been flooded in Hpakant township. In addition, local residents said that water has already started entering the upper neighborhoods of Hpakant, such as Hngetpyawtaw and Mashikahang wards.
Two- story houses went under water if these neighborhoods are flooded.
In Kachin State, which is experiencing heavy rains, the water level of the Irrawaddy River has risen more than five feet above the critical water level, and Myitkyina, Waing Maw, Sumprabum and Chipwi are facing flood. Rivers in the region are also flooded, and water is starting to enter and potential flood in Hpakant and Bhamo.
The demographics of the flood victims are unknown and humanitarian aids are needed.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management (MOHADM), National Unity Government of Myanmar (NUG) warned that there will be heavy rain in Kachin State until July 7.
