KARENNI STATE – According to local news sources, nearly 200 houses of war refugees were damaged due to strong winds in Karenni State and Southern Shan State, which borders Karenni State.
Due to the strong wind attack on May 2nd and 3rd, the western part of Demosso Township, the west side of Hpruso Township, Loikaw Township, and Phekon Township were damaged and needed assistance for rehabilitation.
An IDP in Hpruso township said, “There are more than 40 in Horuso. The list is still being collected. The news is hard to get because it is far from one place to another. Rescue groups are working on it,” he said.
The houses of the IDPs, built with bamboo poles, tarpaulin rain cover sheets, and bamboo walls and all have been rotting due to the effects of the weather since the beginning, and the more damage when the wind blows, the IDPs said.
One of the helpers said, “Currently, they are living together. Places are difficult. It would be great if the donors appeared as soon as possible. It’s so hot that it’s not comfortable to be together for a long time. The rain cover tents are not so expensive. Even the largest site costs only 100,000 MMK for a tent,” he said.
More than 100 houses of war refugees and a monastery were destroyed on April 27th, 2023, due to the strong winds in the western part of Loikaw and Demosso townships of Karenni.
