MYANMAR- Three years after the military coup, according to the United Nations announcement on Monday (June 24), 42 million people are facing poverty (or at risk of poverty).
Myanmar’s middle-class population has fallen by 50 percent over the three years, and 75% of the population (or an estimated 42 million people) is facing poverty (or at risk of poverty), according to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Additionally, 13.3 million people in Myanmar are facing food shortages.
According to the National Unity Government (NUG) Finance and Investment Minister Mr. Tin Tun Naing, stated in early June, Myanmar is currently experiencing economic collapse due to factors such as printing up to 30,000 billion kyat banknotes in the last 3 years and the annual increase in military spending after the military coup, which overthrew the elected civilian government and seized power in February 2021.
Currently, internally displaced people in Myanmar have reached more than 3 million, and another 1.3 million have been displaced across the border, according to the United Nations (UN)
The UN reports that the humanitarian crisis in the country continues after the 2021 military coup.
However, Myanmar in a crisis has been forgotten, and the development aid through the UN dropped by more than 40 percent between 2020 and 2022. At the same time, humanitarian response plans remain underfunded, according to the UN Myanmar office.
The United Nations has helped more than 2 million people in Myanmar and aims to reach 8 million people by the end of 2025.
