MANDALAY DIVISION – The military council is pressuring the shopkeepers to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) in the shops that are open in the municipal area of Mandalay through the township municipality.
According to some shopkeepers, the notification to install CCTV in shops has been sent to shopkeepers through the township municipality starting from the third week of this month.
According to the leaked Aung Myay Thar Zan Township Municipality notice dated August 24, there is pressure to install two CCTV each in the shop and outside the shop for a total of four units.
The notification of the Aung Myay Thar Zan Township Municipality also said that renewal of business licences and new applications will be allowed only when CCTV is installed.
It is included in the notice that those who don’t follow the instructions will be dealt with by municipal law. However, it is not mentioned which section of the municipal law they will be charged with.
A resident expressed his opinion that the military council’s intention in pressuring the shopkeepers to install CCTV is not for the security of the shops, but to assist in arresting those who oppose its regime.
