SHAN STATE – It is reported that military expenses are being collected in several villages and wards of Tachileik Township.
The junta council’s Triangle Region Military Command has demanded over 150 recruits from Tachileik District for the upcoming batch of military conscription and the administration officers are collecting from 500 to over 2,000 Thai Baht per household in wards and villages that are unable to meet the quota of recruits.
Residents said that it is to find replacement as the recruitment quota for the conscription was not met when collecting recruits in the sub townships and village tracts of Tachileik District.
The second batch of militia training by the junta council was conducted at Division Central 11 in Kengtung, with most trainees being Arkha and Larhu ethnic people from the mountain villages in Tachileik District but the upcoming batch will reportedly conscript local Shan people.
According to the 2014 census, Tachileik District had a population of over 170,000 but local data suggests that there could be around a million people who moved to Tachileik after the military coup due to conflicts and poor job market.
