KARENNI STATE – A refugee said on October 12 that nearly 80 people in the Kantharyar refugee camp in the west of Demoso Township are suffering from seasonal flu.
There are 39 households in Kantharyar refugee camp, more than 160 people live there including four pregnant women, three disabled children, and nine elderly people.
“Out of a population of over 100 people in our camp, about 80 have suffered from the flu, including some elderly people. Almost everyone. Sometimes the association gives them medical treatment. When they can’t come, they have to go to the hospital for emergencies. If they’re sick or weak, they have to eat porridge. They can’t afford to eat meat dishes. They have to stay warm,” said an official from camp.
A teacher said that more than 20 children in the current camp are missing school due to seasonal flu.
It’s been reported that although most of the people in the camp are sick, there is a shortage of medicine and they have financial difficulties buying medicine from outside pharmacies.
“Currently, due to the change of season, many people are sick with seasonal flu, and colds. The medicine is not enough,” said the nurse who treats the refugees.
Currently, many people are suffering from colds and seasonal flu due to the daily rain in the western part of Demoso, and schools have been closed due to the flu, said those assisting the refugees.
