MYANMAR – The Ministry of Health of the National Unity Government (NUG) announced that an investigation will be conducted into the death of Dr. Zaw Htwal Aung, who was killed by an unknown group’s mine attack while he was being moved to another prison on a junta convoy.
Dr. Zaw Htwal Aung, a key member of the Chindwin Medical Network (CMN) and an active leader in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), died on August 15 when he was being transferred from Monywa Prison to Mandalay Prison in a mine explosion.
According to the statement of NUG, there were five political prisoners who were seriously injured and more than 30 others who were also injured in the incident in which Dr. Zaw Htwal Aung was killed.
The Ministry of Health of the National Unity Government has announced that they are deeply saddened for Dr. Zaw Htwal Aung and other affected families, and will continue to investigate the entire incident.
Similar to Dr. Zaw Htwal Aung’s incident, when about 150 prisoners were transferred from Monywa Prison, some political prisoners were injured due to a mine attack at the top of Chindwin bridge near Mau Village, Yaesagyo Township, Magway Division on March 3.
In the incident, seven female prisoners were injured, and two political prisoners, Ms. Myint Myint Khaing and Ms. Win Win Nwe, were seriously injured and were taken to Mandalay Hospital.
Dr. Zaw Htwal Aung was abducted by the military junta council and sentenced to 11 years in prison while he was receiving medical treatment in Monywa because he suffered a broken wrist while traveling to provide healthcare to IDP in Sagaing Division.
