BAGO DIVISION – Mr. Kyaw Ye Thu, the former vice chair of Pyay University Students Union, was sentenced to 15 years in prison under two charges by the terrorist junta council, reported a member of the students union.
The 25 year old from Shwetamar Street, Zaytan Ward, Watpote Village Tract, Thegone Township was sentenced to five years under section 52(a) and ten years under section 50(j) of the Terrorist Act by the Nattalin District Court of the junta regime.
“He was given a 15 year sentence for two charges and was immediately sent to Pyay Prison on that day instead of being sent back to Paungde Prison where he was held before,” said the member of the students union.
A resident shared that Mr. Kyaw Ye Thu was detained at his house in Shwetamar Street by junta forces on August 7 this year.
“He was living quietly, running a seafood shop but both he and his wife were taken away at night. The wife was released two days later. She was pregnant then and is about to give birth soon,” said a resident of Watpote Village.
Mr. Kyaw Ye Thu was previously detained at Paungde Prison for a year back in November, 2020 for anti-junta activities.
Similarly, Mr. Soe Myat Min, the former Chair of Pyay District Students Union was also arrested by the junta council in March under section 505 for taking part in the Spring Revolution.
According to the December 27 release of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), a total of 25,630 democracy activists and civilians have been detained since the military coup all over the country with 19,832 of them under detention and 8,403 of them were sentenced to prison.
