BANGLADESH – Bangladeshi media reports that Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Minister of Home Affairs of Bangladesh, warned Arakan Army (AA) and the junta council that they would retaliate if they fire into Bangladesh’s territory.
Home Affairs Minister said when he was meeting with the reporters on June 20th at the office of the Secretariat of Bangladesh government, that if the Myanmar Junta Council and the Arakan Army fire into the territory of Bangladesh again, they will retaliate.
“The Myanmar Junta Army and the Arakan Army have been warned not to fire into Bangladesh territory. Sometimes they (Myanmar Junta Army or Arakan Army) mistakenly fired at our Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB). We have informed them about that. If we display the Bangladesh flag clearly on our boats, no one will fire,” he said.
Due to poor navigation in some parts of Nat River, reaching Saint Martin’s Island from Teknaf has become a challenge for boats. Therefore, the junta army or the Arakan Army opened fire on Bangladeshi boats passing through Myanmar territorial waters. The Bangladeshi Minister continued to say that the situation has improved.
“Currently, there is no firing on boats in Bangladesh’s territorial waters,” the interior minister said. He explained that the two Myanmar ships in the Nat River had also withdrawn.
“We hope that there will be no more shootings. However, those who pass through the area are taking necessary precautions,” the interior minister added.
Gunshots and explosions were heard on June 20 at the Teknaf border across Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district from 4:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
