YANGON DIVISION – Residents of Ward 3 in Mayangone Township, near Aung Thidhi Lane, said that the junta council and the municipal department have announced the removal of nearly 600 houses which they claim to be encroaching.
On the morning of April 26, within Ward 3 near the intersection of Min Dhamma Toad and Aung Thidhi Lane, the authorities delivered letters informing that the 600 homes are to be completely demolished within 30 days, with a final notice setting the deadline for demolition to be May 27.
A local resident stated, “These homes have been here for over 30 years, some even up to 40 years. They are not encroachments. It’s only now that they’re being claimed by the municipality and targeted for removal. There are between 500 and 600 homes.”
Additionally, during November 2022, the same ward, specifically around Kantharyar Boon Kyi Lane and Min Dhamma Riad (near Htoo Min Dhamma Condo), was similarly subjected to forced evictions under the guise of encroachment, using bulldozers and land clearance machines.
