MYANMAR – The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management under National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar reported in its initial report regarding the damage and casualties due to Cyclone Mocha that there had been up to five reported deaths in Rakhine, Shan, Mandalay and Ayeyarwaddy Regions.
Powerful Cyclone Mocha made a landfall at Rakhine coast near Sittwe city on May 14 about 11:30 a.m. with a windspeed of 130 mph.
As part of the consequences of Cyclone Mocha, there were at least five deaths and several injured, according to the initial reports.
In Sittwe, the communication tower of Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT) was broken due to the high windspeed and all telecommunications lines are unavailable.
Furthermore, preliminary reports mentioned that some old trees had fallen and some homes were deroofed in Sittwe, and about fifty homes were blown off in Shwe Oo Kinn Village of Gwa Township, near the famous Kan Thar Yar Beach.
In the evening of May 14, the seven townships of Rakhine State, where the red weather alert was issued, witnessed very strong winds and giant seawaves.
Within 24 hours of the cyclone’s landfall, there could be floods in Rakhine State due to the storm surge, inevitable landslides in Chin State due to heavy rains, lightning and thunder in Yangon, Bago and Ayeyarwaddy Divisions, warned the NUG.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of NUG informed in its news release that it will update the damages and losses due to Cyclone Mocha in a further release.
