MANDALAY DIVISION – Due to heavy rain and stormy weather in Nyaung U Township, ancient pagodas and temples in Bagan Archaeological Area had greatly been affected with floods and damages.
One of the prominent pagodas and temples, Ananda, had been flooded with excess water from heavy rains, Dammayazika pagoda encountered with base plinths collapsed, Htilominlo and Thatbyinnyu Temples faced with walls damages and the entrance of Pahtothamya temple experienced damages as reported by the junta news.
Starting from May 13, heavy rain poured and strong wind blown across Bagan-Nyaung U district.
According to the news by the junta troops, due to continuous heavy downpours, damages piled up in Bagan Archaeological Area including collapsing ancient pagodas and temples, water entered continuously to Ananda Temple and Bagan Golden Palace Hall (B), base plinth gave away about the size of 15 feet (L), 2.5 feet (W), 8 feet (H) (0.01 percent of damages) at the north-west corner of Dammayazika Pagoda, northern walls collapsed near east entrance of Htilominlo pagoda about 8 feet (L), 2 feet (W) (0.001 percent of damages), another southern walls caved in at Thatbyinnyu Temple about 13 feet (L), 3 feet (H), 1.4 inches (T) (0.05 percent of damages) and the entrance of Pahtothamya temple damaged 15 feet (L), 3 inches (T) of a brick layer (0.001 percent of damages) respectively.
In addition, Shwebonethar Pagoda which is 70 feet high and located at YwarThar village, Nyaung U Township, as well reportedly crumbled in May 14 afternoon.
