MYANMAR – The junta council has issued warrants to gold shops and gold traders and arrests are being carried out. The market is closed this morning, gold bars cannot be bought and sold, and markets are closing.
“I can’t buy. I can’t sell. Some of the shops that the owner has been ordered by warrant are not open. I heard that they are dealing after submitting a petition to the junta council’s army. There are also reports that they are dealing through the Gold Merchants association and UMFCCI. The price range is going down. But at that price level, there is no sale or purchase,” said a Yangon gold merchant.
At 10:30 am today, one kyattha (16.3293 g) of pure gold was 53,00,000 kyats. Although the price is around 4400 per US dollar, it is only a price, and there is no buying and selling. It is understood that Money Exchange is operating normally.
“The foreign exchange market on the Thai and Chinese currencies is Bank to Bank, so they are operating normally. They are doing it by opening the market at a discount price. We can’t do anything in the domestic market. The markets have stopped,” explained a foreign exchange dealer from Yangon.
On June 2nd, the junta council issued arrest warrants for 10 gold shop owners and gold merchants and announced yesterday evening that 21 gold merchants were also being arrested and questioned.
