YANGON DIVISION – A large number of prisoners, including political prisoners, from Insein Prison were transferred to Daik U Prison and Tharyarwaddy Prison in five passenger buses at around 5 a.m. on June 23, reported Mr. Taik Tun Oo, an executive committee member of Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM).
“It is estimated that around 250 were transferred prisons but we are still trying to find out the details. We believe that transferring prisoners at Friday midnight or on Saturday and Sunday when there aren’t that many people around the prison can mean that the junta prisons department is conducting some form of an operation,” explained Mr. Taik Tun Oo.
He added that just in June, political prisoners and those who stood up for oppressed prisoners were targeted and transferred prisons in Insein Prison, Mandalay’s Ohbo Prison and Kyaikmaraw Prison in Mon State as some sort of mission or military operation and that there needs to be more focus on the situations in prisons.
