SHAN STATE (SOUTH) – According to the locals, on March 23, the junta council police released a person who tried to commit rape in Kaylar village, by receiving bribe of 2 lakhs in Inle region, Nyaung Shwe township, Southern Shan state.
It was known that a man who is in his middle age tried to rape a 25-year-old woman from Kaylar village in mid-April. But the woman escaped and informed Nan Pan police station.
A person who personally close to the victim’s family mentioned that “when they (the victim’s family) informed the police station, the police let the family members to go back by promising that they will stand with the victim. No case was occurred. Both of the accused and the victim are from the same village. It been so long that the rape attempt case occurred but we can disclose to the public now for the sake of the victim’s safety. The victim is in a safe place now.”
It has been reported that the police station officer Nyi Nyi Aung and all of the police from Nan Pan police station are included in taking the bribe. After releasing the accused by receiving bribe, they (police) asked for more extorted money to the accused.
A friend of the victim mentioned that “the case occurred in the tomato farm. The victim girl did not want to receive the indemnity but would like to open case. But the ward administrative officer and the police, including some of the villagers, forced the victim to placate by saying that if you don’t would like to be bashed twice, just placate. And they also said that they will impose fines to the accused. When the police didn’t help to open case, she can’t afford anything.”
The locals mentioned that even though a large number of rape cases occurred in Inle region before, as the ward administrative officers and the police intervened, the cases didn’t reach to the stage of opening cases and the accused were released from the crimes they committed.
