KACHIN STATE – Locals said that the color of Uru River, which flows through Hpakhant Town, has significantly changed to grey color these days, the same as lime stones dissolved water.
Local residents think that the liquids used in gold ore mining at upper part of river was washed away into the river but the real cause of color change is not yet known.
The Uru River used to be clear and green. Gold and metal mining, jade mining have been extensively carried out during the military regime led by Senior General Than Shwe, and the water of Uru river turned into coffee color. At present, it is getting worse and changed even to grey color.
The Uru River originates from Hukawng Plains in Kachin State and continues to flow into the Chindwin River at Htwetwa Village in Humlin Township of Sagaing Division.
