MYANMAR – Locals from Yangon and Mandalay divisions stated that social networks: Facebook and Messenger are not accessible after VPNs being banned in Myanmar.
“We cannot connect VPN starting from this morning. Even VPN we used to use normally is unable to connect. When we checked with Wifi Service Company, they suggested us to use another VPNs. Though we can connect with that VPN, we cannot open Facebook. Both status and pictures do not appear. We can only type on messenger. We couldn’t call,” one of the civilians from Mayangone Township said.
According to the information from one of the internet fibre line service companies based in Yangon, VPNs are said to have been banned by using China software and many inquiry calls reached out this morning and afternoon since most popular VPNs within Myanmar Civilians cannot be connect.
“Rumors had been spreading as Great Firewall like China will be built. We don’t know exact information about which Chinese company is working,” a new source acquaintance with Myanmar Telecommunication elaborated on March 14 how the junta council gave tender for building a Great Firewall to block VPNs to a China company which reportedly stationing in Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon.
After the going military coup on February 01, 2021, civilians had been using Facebook social network by connecting through VPN since the junta council had officially prohibited to use Facebook in Myanmar.
