RAKHINE STATE – The junta council has temporarily shut down Thandwe Airport starting June 4 due to the battles against the Arakan Army (AA) that broke out near Thandwe, according to airlines.
The announcements by airlines mentioned that the airport will be temporarily closed from June 4 till 9 and that they will update when flights are available again.
“It is temporarily closed till the 9th. It is not certain if the flights will run on the 10th. We will update when we get the information,” said an official from a domestic airline.
AA launched an attack on the junta forces stationed at Gott mountain located near Thandwe, the site of world famous Ngapali Beach on June 3, leading to fierce fighting that are still ongoing.
A resident of Thandwe said that the junta council is desperately defending using both air and navy forces. “Gott is the most beautiful beach in Ngapali. The junta council is furiously bombing this place without consideration since the morning,” said the resident.
Gott Mountain, located two miles away from Thandwe Airport, is also the location of several world class resorts and hotels.
