YANGON DIVISION – Witnesses confirmed that a female pedestrian was run over by a Yangon Bus Service (YBS) 61 bus, near Hledan bus stop in Kamayut Township of Yangon Division, and died on the spot.
The woman was trying to cross the Insein road, near Hledan, from the side of Anawrahta housing, when she was hit by YBS 61 bus on May 6 around 9 a.m. and died on the spot.
“She wouldn’t be dead if she could use the overhead pedestrian bridge. Those overhead pedestrian bridges were constructed, in the areas with heavy traffic but the general public are not allowed to use them. Those traffic police on duty at the traffic lights are interested only to extort money from motorists. They never work for the safety of pedestrians. Now one has died and another one (the bus driver) will have to face serious charges. The accident happened just a short distance away from the traffic lights,” recounted the witness.
It was known that the place of accident was just next to the junta’s bunker at the Hledan crossroads and the junta soldiers had taken photo evidence of the accident before the body was sent to the Yangon General Hospital by Social Welfare Association of Kamayut Township.
All over Yangon City, all the overhead pedestrian bridges were shut off by junta troops after the coup and pedestrians have to risk crossing the roads with heavy traffic.
