KACHIN STATE – For the current education year, the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) has opened up to 488 schools and also completed the common curriculum framework for the basic education, Lieutenant General Gun Maw, the Vice Chair of KIO, announced on his social media.
KIO first opened schools in 1967 and the education department of KIO was formed in 1978. From 1994 to 2011 during the ceasefire period, Myitkyina also became a test center for the matriculation exam but with the end of the ceasefire, Myitkyina stopped being a test center as well.
The KIO education department also found the need for higher level education in addition to basic education and plans to open an additional 233 schools in the 2024-2025 education year, going from a total of 215 schools in the previous year to 448 schools with 2,679 teachers and 415 education staff employed.
As for higher level education institutions, KIO has opened the Teacher Training College (Mai Ja Yang), Mai Ja Yang College, Administration Officer Training Institute, Agriculture and Husbandry Diploma Institute, Nursing school, Military Officer Training Schools, Kachin State Comprehensive University (KSCU), Federal Law Academy and Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Mai Ja Yang).
According to Lieutenant General Gun Maw, the operation of private education institutes in KIO administration territory was officially permitted on June 11, 2010.
In addition, it is informed that the Basic Education Common Curriculum Framework has been completed and the 6-3-3 system will be used from KG to Grade 12 based on the mother tongue and that non-Kachin ethnic people and religious organisations are also permitted to run private schools.
