MYANMAR- The political detainees at the Myingyan Prison, even women above 60 years old, were reportedly tortured and facing forced labor by wardens. The prisoners with health conditions also had difficulties in receiving medical care, according to the People’s Revolutionary Committee of Myingyan.
Lately, many well-known political detainees including the Minister of Sagaing, Dr. Myint Naing, and others from Yangon, Mandalay, and Monywa cities were transferred to Myingyan prison and were facing brutal oppression by junta regime forces.
“On the day of arrival to Myingyan prison, the detainees were reportedly kicked and hit by the wardens and forced to sit in punishment position and forced to listen to counter-revolutionary acts by the junta. They were abused physically and emotionally,” said the committee member close to the detainees.
The political detainees were reportedly tortured by the wardens and inmates (tugs who were instructed to mistreat the political detainees by wardens) in Myingyan prison.
Due to the beatings and torturing inside the prison, the Monwya University Student (ex) leader, Mr. Zin Min Htet is reportedly in a coma. He, who was a healthy young adult, resulted in such conditions under detained period, is solely responsible by Junta prison guards and officers, as mentioned by Monywa Strike Committee.
The one behind those brutal oppressions of political detainees was Prison Officer, Ms. Myint Myint Zaw. The families of the detainees had to bribe 25,000 kyats a month to avoid the torments. The other wardens involved in this torment are wardens Mr. Win Kyaing, Mr. Myat Kyaw Thu, and Mr. Maung Maung Thein. Monywa Stike Committee announced that they condemn those junta pillars’ brutal acts and will make them pay back for their brutal actions.
Currently, the junta regime has restricted the parcels and letters sent to the prison with the excuse of emerging Covid-19 cases. Due to various oppressions and not being able to receive supplies from outside, life in Myingyan prison is hard, as quoted by a close friend of a political detainee who has been recently transferred from Mandalay’s Obo Prison to Myingyan prison.
