MANDALAY DIVISION – Mr. Set Aung, Deputy Minister of Planning and Finance during the NLD Government term, who was sentenced to three years in prison under the State Secret Section by the military coup council, has been released from Yamethin Prison on Friday (June 2).
Deputy Minister Set Aung was not freed with amnesty but freed after completing his prison term, according to the source connected to Yamethin Prison.
After the coup, the junta council arrested and charged the NLD government’s economic adviser, Professor Sean Turnell under the State Secret Section, alongside several other prominent NLD leaders, claiming that the economic data of the country was found on his computer.
Those sued were State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, Mr. Kyaw Win and Mr. Soe Win, who were ministers of planning and finance in the NLD government, Deputy Minister Set Aung and Mr. Sean Turnell. The junta council sentenced the five of them to three years each in prison.
At present, only the state counselor remains in prison, while all four of her fellow defendants have been released.
Mr. Set Aung, who was released on Friday, also served as the vice chairman of the Central Bank.
